The Center for Leadership Initiatives is now accepting nominations for
the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation’s 2008 Charlie Award!   

Charles & Lynn Shusterman Family Foundation

Now in its fifth year, the Charlie Award, named for philanthropist Charles Schusterman z”l, annually recognizes the achievements and vision of Taglit-birthright israel alumni from around the world. To date 45 individuals from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Denmark, India, Israel, Russia, Spain, the USA, Uruguay and the Ukraine have received this prestigious award.
 
The Charlie Award program is project of CLI, a U.S. based operating foundation offering leadership development programs to current and emerging Jewish leaders. Coordinating the Charlie Awards program for the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation is one component of a diverse portfolio of crafted gatherings, fellowships and other programs that train and network leaders.

We are seeking nominations of Taglit-birthright israel alumni who have returned to their home communities and engaged in Jewish community with initiative and energy. The Charlie Award program is designed to recognize those who serve as role models to their peers, with innovation and vision.  The 2008 Charlie Award program in Israel will take place this July 3rd through 14th (2008).

1. Charlie Award Components: 

Recipients of the annual Charlie Award (Charlies) are flown to Israel to receive a Charlie Award alongside 14 peers from all corners of the globe. While in Israel (July 3-July 14, 2008), the Charlies will participate in a unique journey designed by CLI to enhance and develop leadership skills, to expand knowledge and to offer life-shaping experiences. Through this intensive 12 day program, the Charlies are equipped with tools to further develop their successful track toward effective innovation, work and volunteerism in today’s global Jewish community.

Post trip, recipients connect with the Charlies global network, which by July 2008 will include 60 individuals spread throughout five continents. In addition they will participate in the Charlies philanthropy program, through which CLI provides each individual with an $1800 USD philanthropic budget to be divided evenly between two Jewish organizations of their choice, one in Israel and one in their local community.

2. Award Recipient Criteria 

Nominees for the Charlie Award must fit all of the following criteria: 

  • Taglit-birthright israel alumni* Between ages 20 and 28
  • Proactively engaged in conventional and/or non conventional Jewish community leadership or involvement
  • Demonstrates initiative and leadership qualities
  • Available for travel to Israel this July 2nd through 15th (2008)
  • Have a valid passport

Charlie Award recipients are individuals of good character, demonstrating thoughtfulness, humility and humor. Their connections to the Jewish community, the State of Israel, and the future of global Jewish life are notable in their optimism. They live up to the belief that “while no one person is obligated to complete the task, neither is anyone free to desist from it” (Pirke Avot - Ethics of Our Fathers 2:16). Following their Birthright experience they proactively created positive change in the world, wherever and whenever they could, simply because they have skills, vision, and a deep connection to the Jewish people. As Charles Schusterman z"l did throughout his life, Charlies are individuals who strive for excellence and aim to achieve great impact with their work as visionaries, activists, innovators, leaders and organizers in their local and global Jewish community.

4. Instructions and Process for 2008 Charlie Award Online Nomination Form 

Your 2008 Charlie Award Online Nomination Form must be submitted by Thursday, December 27th, 2007.
Suitable candidates will be invited by CLI to submit a Self-Profile Form in the early months of 2008.
In the spring of 2008, the names of the 2008 Charlie Award recipients will be announced.
